Unity or Uniformity
Sunday, September 9th, 2007Folks are mistaken when they think that unity and uniformity are the same thing. If you are having a problem with two groups of people and you place then in the same color shirt and pants…that will not solve the issue. That will produce uniformity because they are all dressed alike, but that will not produce unity
The irony is that unity is not a function of uniformity. Just because people dress alike does not make them think and act alike or have the same set of values. Placing everyone in the same color pants and shirt does not mean you have settled the ethnic or cultural problem. It just means you can no tell the difference in the groups. They still exist…they still exist under what ever type of clothes they are wearing.
In a church, just because we go to the same building on Sunday morning does not automatically mean that we are all of the same heart and mind. It does mean that there is uniformity because we are all coming to the same place and sitting in the same room and singing the same songs. Uniformity is external, but unity is internal.
Today, do you just “go to church” or are you in unity with the direction of your church?
