Several years ago the world watched as three gray whales off Point Barrow, Alaska were trapped under an ice cap approximately 8 inches thick. Their only hope was to somehow be transported five miles past the ice cap to the open sea. A procedure was devised to hopefully get them to safety. Rescuers began cutting a string of breathing holes about 20-yards apart in the ice. For eight days they coaxed the whales from one hole to the next. Finally, with the help of those breaking the ice, the whales swam to freedom.

You know the church is a lot like that string of breathing holes. We’re trapped in a frozen world of difficulty in our job or family or finances. We desperately need air and have held our breath about as long as we can.

Did you know the Lord has provided a breathing hole for you? The church is that place where you can be loved and encouraged. The irony of this story is that somehow along the way, one of the trio of whales vanished and was never seen again. I wonder if he thought he could make it by himself? I’m afraid too many folks are attempting to hold their breath and make it by themselves from Sunday to Sunday. God has already cut a breathing hole for you. It’s called Wednesday! Go to church next Wednesday and get the air necessary to make it the rest of the week.
