The Main Thing
What would you think about a teacher who did not teach students? What would you think of a fireman that did not fight fires? What would you think of a physician that would not help people? Your response would probably be, “That’s what those individuals are supposed to do.”
The purpose of the church today is to take the “Good News” of Christ and share it with the world. The main purpose of the church is NOT to care for the poor or feed the needy or build houses for the homeless. Those are very fine endeavors but that is not the primary task of the church.
The main purpose of the church is to reveal the mystery that Christ is the answer to the dilemmas of today and that “no man comes to the Father except through Jesus.” All the other activities are good and noble but the church has been entrusted with telling the message. The church must make “the main thing, the main thing.”
